Hi,

There are two versions of Minecraft for the Xbox One, the bedrock edition and the Xbox One edition, the latter version has been replaced with the former and is no longer updated, the bedrock edition is the current version.

Your son's friends may of invited him to the old version of the game and this might be where the problem arises.

Thanks. Is there a way they can play together? We just purchased the XBox so he could play with friends who have Xbox. We have a playstation with which he can crossplatform play minecraft with these friends, but that's a little bit of a clunky process. Seems like if he could crossplatform play from a totally different system, they should be able to play together on Xbox. Is it possible? If he is the one to send the invite, would it work?

There is the Older minecraft xbox one edition and the Minecraft bedrock edition which when you hover over it is just called "Minecraft" Your sons friends might be playing on the older one while your son has a different version

The PC/MAC is separate from the other versions in terms of cross-play. As in the only way to join a game with console or mobile players (or Windows 10) is to play on a realm.

Console (Xbox and PS), Mobile and Windows 10 will all work without needing realms as long as your friends are online or on the same network as yourself.

It is only the PC/MAC version of the game that will require you to use realms to join each others game.

But his friends are on Xbox One edition and my son has the newest minecraft. Apparently they can't play together because they're on different versions?? That's what I'm trying to determine. They're not trying to join realms.

his friends will need to purchase the latest version which is just called minecraft, his friends are using a now unavailable to purchase version from a good few years ago.

there is no other way for him to play them as there is now no way to get the xbox one edition.

If the friends purchased Minecraft digitally before 20 September 2017 then they had the Xbox One Edition of the game, which has been completely replaced by the Bedrock version of the game.

Xbox One Edition is still available in physical copy form from major retailers.

Some retailers still sell the Xbox One Edition of the game, old stock. Well atleast in my region that is.
